Prof. Kai Thaler has a New Publication!


The LAIS Program would like to congratulate Professor Kai Thaler (Global Studies) who co-authored the article “Statebuilding and indigenous rights implementation: Political incentives, social movement pressure, and autonomy policy in Central America” with Eric Mosinger and Giorleny Altamirano Rayo. The piece, published in volume 175 of World Development in March of 2024 examines why promises of Indigenous autonomy have often fallen short, arguing that Indigenous autonomy policies are most likely to be implemented in practice when states see ways that autonomy will help advance state influence and economic gains. They show how these processes have varied across Honduras, Panama, and Nicaragua. Read more here
