UCSB Latin American and Iberian Studies Program

Prof. Javiera Barandiarán’s New Achievements!

The LAIS Program would like to congratulate Professor Javiera Barandiaran (Global Studies), for having won a residency fellowship for March 2024 at the Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Center to work on her book examining the mineral trade between Chile and the United States and its implications for climate change. Read more here.

Along with this achievement, earlier in the year, she worked with researchers from UCSB’s Center for Restorative Environmental Work (CREW), to create a “Decarbonizing Chile” story map to probe the trade-offs and challenges involved in phasing out coal while expanding mining. Take a look at the story map here.

Last but not least, Professor Barandiarán has just been appointed Chair of the Area/Global Studies Initiative (AGI), of which LAIS is part —way to go, Javiera!
