Bio:

¡Hola! My name is Miguel. I’m a first-year master’s student in the Latin American and Iberian Studies (LAIS) program at UC Santa Barbara. I obtained my BA from UC Santa Cruz, where I participated in various research projects ranging from venomous animals in Latin America, and Mexican migration, to the housing crisis in California. My research experience motivated me to continue my studies and conduct further research on issues relevant to me. Now, as a graduate student at UC Santa Barbara and part of the LAIS program, my research interests focus on Mexican migration, transnational families, gender, education, agriculture, and children. I am interested in investigating how gender impacts migrant parents and influences their parental responsibilities toward children who remain in Mexico and those who live in the United States. As a first-generation college student, I am also interested in research and advocacy related to education, seeking ways and resources to help youth continue their education and obtain a university degree. Being part of the LAIS program allows me to utilize an interdisciplinary approach in my research by exposing me to diverse disciplines that provide unique components for my work.
