Hi Everyone! My name is Marlene Torres-Magana. I am a current graduate student in the LAIS program. My research interest lies in understanding how Mexican mestizaje, as a racial project, produces shifting politics on race and difference and contributes to the erasure and silencing of black ancestry in Mexico. As a Chicana/o Studies & Black Studies undergraduate double major at UCSB, I was always interested in linking my research between these two fields of study. The LAIS program was a perfect choice for me because it provides and supports an interdisciplinary research approach. Not to mention, the faculty and staff affiliated and part of the LAIS program are amazing as well!
