Prof. David López-Carr Received a Grant and Published New Work


Congratulations to Professor David López-Carr (Geography) who won a grant with UCSB ISBER Collaborative Research Initiative Grant Program for the years 2022-2023 to work on the project  “Integrating planetary health into households and communities in the Maya Biosphere Reserve (MBR), Guatemala’’. Along with this achievement, he co-authored an article with Javier Rubio-Velazquez and Hugo A. Loaiciga, “Human-Induced Resource Scarcity in the Colorado River Basin and Its Implications for Water Supply and the Environment in the Mexicali Valley Transboundary Aquifer.” The article was published in Volume 113 of the Annals of the American Association of Geographers in March of 2023. It works to calculate the annual water deficit in the Valley in reference to agricultural and socioeconomic trends in the region. Read more here

Lastly, Professor Lopez-Carr co-authored with Armendáriz-Arnez, C., Tamayo-Ortiz, M., Mora-Ardila, F., Rodríguez-Barrena, M. E., Barros-Sierra, D., Castillo, F., Sánchez-Vargas, A., Deardorff, J., Eskenazi, B., & Mora, A. M the article,  “Prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 infection and impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in avocado farmworkers from Mexico.” The article was published in Frontiers in Public Health in December of 2023 and looks at the prevalence of and impact SARS-CoV-2 had on avocado farmworkers mental health and economic security in Michoacan, Mexico.
