LAIS Graduate Affiliate Initiative

The Program in Latin American and Iberian Studies (LAIS) is pleased to announce its new LAIS graduate affiliates initiative.

This new affiliate program will connect graduate students enrolled in departments and programs across campus and in LAIS who are pursuing research in and on Latin America and Iberia. Our goal is to spark dialogue and create community among people who share common interests but who may not necessarily know each other. Since one of LAIS’s strengths is its interdisciplinarity, students from all disciplines and divisions are welcome.

As graduate affiliates, students will receive information about the LAIS Program’s events, where they will be able to meet other students and scholars with common interests (faculty, lecturers, librarians, staff). They will also be able -and encouraged- to propose events such as tertulias (informal conversations, lectures or roundtables on timely topics) or other initiatives, which LAIS would help organize. We want students to feel that they can count on LAIS for intellectual enrichment and debate and to share their research projects and interests.

As LAIS graduate affiliates, students will have access to a lounge and study spaces for their personal or collective work to use during standard business hours. They will also qualify to apply for the LAIS Alumni Award, a small grant to support graduate research. This new award has been established thanks to donations from former LAIS Master’s students received in 2021 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the LAIS Master’s program. Finally, once a student has become a LAIS graduate affiliate we will feature their profile on our webpage.

To apply to join this exciting new initiative, students must fill out this form: https://forms.gle/AzCFxGSpucLS8jWp6.

We in LAIS are very excited to welcome and meet the soon-to-be new student members of our community.
